The Nith Room at Friars Carse offers private dining in Dumfries within a historic Scottish country house hotel overlooking the River Nith. Suitable for everything from birthday celebrations and family gatherings to anniversary dinners and smaller corporate events, the private dining space accommodates groups of up to 18 guests in a relaxed riverside setting steeped in local history. Scotland’s national poet Robert Burns was once known to visit Friars Carse, adding another layer of character to the venue.
The kitchen focuses on contemporary Scottish cuisine with subtle European influences, using seasonal local produce wherever possible. Menus change regularly, particularly at dinner, where guests can choose from set course menus and bespoke private dining options designed around the occasion and dietary requirements.
Starters may include dishes such as chicken liver parfait or sauteed wild mushrooms served with focaccia, followed by mains including roast pork loin, pan-fried chicken breast, Scottish salmon, sea bass, potato gnocchi and confit duck leg. Grill dishes such as a 10oz sirloin steak with tenderstem broccoli and confit garlic are also available, while desserts range from chocolate orange creme brulee to apple crumble with vanilla ice cream. Cheese boards with chutney, crackers and fruit can also be added for groups looking for a more indulgent finish.
The dining room itself reflects the wider country house setting, with a traditional dark wooden panelling and neutral walls, that allows the riverside views to take centre stage. Large windows overlook the water and surrounding greenery, creating a calm backdrop for long lunches and evening private dining events.
The venue also offers private afternoon teas featuring finger sandwiches, sweet treats and warm scones with cream and jam served on tiered stands. Breakfasts and tailored group dining packages are also available, while the chefs are happy to adapt menus for most dietary requirements.
