Located on Old Quebec Street, just moments from Marble Arch, Chourangi draws on 300 years of Calcutta’s culinary history - shaped by European, Mughal and Chinese influences - and translates it into a space designed for gathering, celebrating and sharing food.
Stylish interiors greet you as soon as you walk through the door. Rattan-stained furniture, cream walls and subtle architectural references to Calcutta not only look beautiful, but take the restaurant's concept to a deeper level. It’s a setting that works well for private dining, offering enough character to feel distinct while remaining adaptable for different occasions, from smaller celebrations to more structured group dinners.
Take a peruse at the a la carte to get a flavour of what's to come. For example, you might begin with smaller plates such as prawn cutlets served with coriander and a mustard-forward kasundi dip, or banana flower croquettes paired with coconut, cinnamon and tamarind chutney.
From the tandoor and grill, options like laal murgi kebab and tandoori lamb chops bring a more robust element to the table, before moving into the main dishes. Here, the menu nods to Calcutta’s defining recipes: chicken rezala with its gently spiced, aromatic sauce; railway lamb curry, rich and comforting; and a Calcutta-style chicken biryani that anchors the meal. If you want a large, hearty plate all to yourself - go ahead, but these dishes are even better when shared so the team reocmmend ordering a bunch for the table.
Drinks are almost as important as the food here and cocktails really finish off the experience. Classic cocktails are readily available, from Aperol Spritz and Negroni to Sidecar and French 75. But, if you're happy to try something a little more creative, look at Chourangi's signatures. A mezcal-based Fantastic Bombastic combines lime, agave and watermelon, while we'd be up for trying the Silent Chilli with mint, chilli, gin, apple juice and sugar syrup.
