Just off Warwick Lane in the City, Cutlers’ Hall, a Grade II-listed Victorian livery hall, comes into its own during the festive season, when its richly layered interiors feel almost purpose-built for end-of-year celebrations.
The décor does much of the work. Polished wooden panelling lines the walls, deep red patterned carpets soften the space underfoot, and candle-style chandeliers cast a warm glow across the room. Add in festive floral details and low winter light filtering through tall windows and the whole place takes on a distinctly Dickensian quality - evocative, cosy and theatrical. It’s the kind of setting that immediately says Christmas.
Christmas parties typically make use of the two principal rooms. The Livery Hall provides a grand backdrop for festive dining, while the adjoining Court Room offers a natural shift in mood later in the evening - ideal for drinks, dancing and letting the party unfold. Together, they allow events to move seamlessly from dinner to celebration without losing momentum.
Food is traditional but with a creative flair. Starters might include duck confit and cranberry croquette with smoked paprika mayo and chicory salad, chilled smoked trout and watercress tatin with horseradish crème fraîche, or a classic prawn and avocado cocktail with Marie Rose sauce. For mains, slow-cooked sirloin of beef is served with swede pomme Anna, sticky onion, savoy cabbage and wild mushroom cream sauce, while roast Norfolk turkey breast comes with all the trimmings: cranberry stuffing, bacon-wrapped chipolatas, roast red potatoes, honey parsnips, carrots and sprouts. Salmon en croûte offers a lighter option, paired with crushed new potatoes, green beans and hollandaise. Desserts stay true to the season, from classic Christmas pudding with brandy sauce and winter berries to a lighter trifle délice with fruit compôte and sherry cream.
Entertainment is another highlight. The grand piano in the Livery Hall can be used for classical Christmas hymns during dinner or playful, reworked versions of modern favourites. Later, the Court Room comes into its own as a space for a proper Christmas boogie - energetic, festive and just formal enough to feel special.
