The area itself is steeped in history, dating back to the time when Southwark and London were separate, the latter being entirely north of the river. Through the 16th and 17th centuries, the area become a hive of activity, packed with traders of leather, felt, pottery and soap. There were (and still are) plenty of pubs too, further adding to the heaving throng of people.
Now, you won’t find as many live goats and brawling drunkards. Rather, the area plays host to everything from cheese stalls to tapas bars, where aromatic hog roasts turn and free samples are abundant. All of this creates a brilliant atmosphere at Christmas, making it a great place to celebrate.
When planning a Christmas party, no matter the size, it’s important to consider transport links. Borough Market is a great option on this front, as it’s a two minute walk from London Bridge station, which has great connections to the rest of London and further afield. It’s also by the river, so you can take a stroll and soak in the view before your event. It’s also accessible by boat, so you can get a cracking view of the London skyline on your way over.
Speaking of the skyline, you can’t discuss Borough Market and London Bridge without mentioning The Shard. This, one of the tallest buildings in not just the UK but the whole of Europe, has some stunning Christmas venues worth checking out. Naturally, they are at the higher end of the pricing scale, but celebrating hundreds of feet in the air doesn’t come cheap!
