SquareMeal Review of The Woolpack Inn - Stroud

Immortalised by Laurie Lee in Cider with Rosie, this historic, ridge-top inn dates back to the early 1640s. Current owner, artist Danny Chadwick, has retained the rural charm of the place, which resembles an old attic room with its weathered floorboards, rough plastered walls & rickety mismatched furniture. There’s just enough space for a bar & three small dining areas hunkered between old stone walls – although everyone heads outside in summer. The kitchen delivers a refined version of pub grub based on top-quality Gloucestershire beef, seafood from Cornwall & whatever the locals are growing in their gardens. The blackboard menu includes crowd-pleasers such as ham, egg & chips, while the evening brings more ambitious offerings such as wild sea bass with a green bean, pea & courgette risotto or Gloucester Old Spot sausages with mash, spring greens & red onion sauce.
