The Ben Nevis

SquareMeal Review of The Ben Nevis

With its Stone Age art installation, sparse tables and a bar made from reclaimed timbers, this single-roomed drinking den shows admirable purity of purpose. Count the single malts shelved ceiling-high behind the bar and you’ll probably give up after you reach 150 – ‘uisge beatha’ is the order of the day here. However, beer heads aren’t neglected, with names such as Deuchars IPA, Hefeweizen from Glasgow’s own West Brewery or even Thick Black stout often on the pumps. The Ben Nevis opened in its current guise around 1999, so it’s now a little scuffed around the edges, but the whisky, bar food, regular Celtic folk music sessions, bottled ales and affable, well-informed staff more than compensate. Expect a motley crew ranging from girls in paint-splattered overalls to suited types hunched over iPhones. The place also has its own online whisky shop.
