This neighbourhood steak joint has won plenty of praise from Balham locals, thanks to its simple, wallet-friendly formula. Choose between either a bavette or pichana (rump cap) cut and combine it with five sauces, including chimichurri and the super-spicy 'burning bear'. The latter is named after an escapade in Russia, during which the owner was chased by a bear (yes, really). On our visit, we found the bavette to be tender and nicely charred. Healthy sides target the area's yummy mummies, such as chargrilled broccoli or Asian-inspired grated carrot salad, although skinny chips and mac ‘n’ cheese are also on offer. For a main course, non-meaty choices include cheesy salads of quinoa and feta or mozzarella and basil. Reasonably priced wines, English bubbles and Curious craft brews appear on the drinks list and, if you're after a sweet treat, try the wickedly thick milkshakes. There are seriously good puds too: our vote goes to fruity ice cream pavlova.
