The Wellington is a Birmingham institution, a haven for real ale enthusiasts, and a pub that proudly puts beer at the heart of everything it does. Opened in December 2004, the Welly was the realisation of landlord Nigel Barker’s decade-long dream of bringing a true real ale free house to the city. Frustrated by the limited options available in Birmingham at the time, he set out to create a pub that would champion variety and quality, and it was an instant success. With queues at the door from day one, the Welly started with 10 hand pulls, quickly expanding to 16 within six months. By the end of its first year, it had already sold an incredible 2,610 different ales.
Fast forward to 2014, and the Welly took things to the next level, expanding beyond its ground-floor home to occupy two additional floors, complete with 27 hand pulls, an upstairs bar, a function room, and a roof terrace. Today, it remains a real ale paradise, offering an ever-changing lineup of interesting and well-kept beers. But while ale is king here, there’s something for everyone, including quality lagers, ciders, a vast selection of Scotch whisky, international whiskies, and an ever-growing collection of gins and rums.
One of the Welly’s most unique aspects is its approach to food – or rather, its lack of a kitchen. Instead of serving meals, the pub encourages guests to bring their own food or order a takeaway to be delivered straight to their table. Whether it’s a curry, pizza, or something entirely different, plates, cutlery, and condiments are all provided. There’s also a solid selection of bar snacks, including Black Country pork scratchings, Mini Cheddars, Jonny’s Spicy Rings, and the ever-essential Scampi Fries.
For those planning an event, the Welly offers two private rooms for hire. The William Haywood Room on the first floor has a 50-inch LED TV, roof terrace access, and space for 25 guests, while the Meeting Room on the second floor accommodates 30 people and includes basic kitchen facilities.
Located in the heart of Birmingham’s business district, just a short walk from New Street and Snow Hill Stations, The Wellington is a true beer lover’s paradise, offering an unrivalled selection of ales, a relaxed atmosphere, and the freedom to enjoy your favourite food alongside your favourite pint.
