Overlooking the waterfront in Swansea, The Shed is located in a large, red brick warehouse and run by executive chef Jonathan Woolway. Woolway previously spent 16 years at St John in London before returning home to Wales to open his own restaurant.
The menu at The Shed reflects the natural bounty of the surrounding area, which means it’s constantly changing in line with what’s in season. St John’s influence on Woolway is not to be ignored. The a la carte menu is heavy on meat options, with a few fish dishes thrown in for good measure. Vegetarian dishes are few and far between. Guests can snack on the likes of crispy pig skin with ketchup while they peruse the menu, which comprises a selection of starters, mains, sides and desserts.
Examples of starters include pork and sage rissole with fried egg and brown sauce, and crispy duck wings with arrocina beans, mojo verde and pickled jalapenos. Mains might feature Onglet steak with beetroot and horseradish, or braised Gower lamb with mash and mint sauce. Don’t sleep on the dessert list, where things like vanilla rice pudding with rhubarb jam and custard reside.
There is a standalone bar at The Shed where you can pop in for a drink and a bite off the snack menu. Cocktails are made by a team of expert bartenders and include a selection of classics and drinks with a twist. The dining room, meanwhile, is a large, industrial-style space with individual tables and counter seating. Large windows flood the room with natural light, while a theatrical open kitchen allows diners to see the chefs in action.
