On Clayton Road, just off Peckham High Street, The Prince of Peckham is a proper south London boozer with a big heart. A giant Welcome to Peckham sign greets you outside, and it's a fair summary of what you'll find inside: a pub that's built around its community.
It's run by landlord Clement Ogbonnaya, who went to school just down the road. He took over the old Clayton Arms and opened the Prince in 2017, aiming to create an aspirational community pub where old and new Peckham could sit side by side. The name's a nod to Lee 'The Peckham Prince' Stanley, a sharp, charismatic character from the much-loved Channel 4 sitcom Desmond's.
It's a pub where everyone's welcome, and that's not just talk. The crowd's genuinely mixed, bringing together long-time locals, the area's elders and newer young professionals. Ogbonnaya wants everyone who walks in to feel royal.
Behind the bar, you'll find everything from craft beers to rum cocktails and a Peckham Negroni. The kitchen's always leaned towards Caribbean flavours, with dishes like jerk chicken, hot wings and saltfish fritters alongside British-Caribbean mash-ups such as curried shepherd's pie and jerk sausage rolls.
There's always something going on. Over the years, the Prince has hosted quizzes, comedy nights, spoken word, open mics, art exhibitions and even speed dating. There's a roomy outdoor area for sunny days and a basement bar that's perfect for more intimate evenings. It's also been featured on BBC Two's Saving Britain's Pubs with Tom Kerridge.
It's no secret that it's popular, so don't be surprised if there's a queue at the weekend. It's worth the wait, though. Whether you're after a quiet pint, a big night out or somewhere to catch up with friends, The Prince of Peckham is a true local that's made everyone feel at home.
