In a sign that Peckham is becoming the new Fulham – only cooler – this family- and dog-friendly backstreet pub received a smart yet pedestrian greige refurb in 2015. Yes, some of the old gaff’s soul may have been lost, but The Albert has become a welcoming all-rounder. The pick of three draughts when we visit, is Essex outfit Mighty Oak’s seasonal golden ale, Yellow Snow. A selection of well-known bottled craft beers such as Yakima Red provide back-up, as does a list of two dozen accessibly priced wines. Similarly populist pub grub could kick off with breaded whitebait and tartare sauce or grilled halloumi with rocket. Next might be ham, eggs and fries; seafood pie with spinach (£10.50); tomato and herb linguine; or pork belly, roasted veg and red wine gravy. Apple crumble with vanilla ice cream is a likely dessert du jour – and The Albert’s beer garden is similarly sweet.
