Mexican-inspired food in the heart of the rolling Somerset countryside sets the tone at The Prickly Pear in Bruton, a cosy, characterful spot that blends the feel of a neighbourhood pub with a bold, flavour-led menu. It’s a relaxed, sociable space that works just as well for casual drinks as it does for a full meal, with a welcoming atmosphere suited to everything from family dining to group gatherings and special occasions.
Inside, the setting leans warm and eclectic, with green walls, wood panelling and a mix of artwork adding personality throughout. A wooden wraparound bar anchors the room, while copper pendant lighting, terracotta tones and brown leather seating create a comfortable, lived-in feel.
The menu is designed for sharing, with a mix of starters, small plates and larger dishes. To begin, there are options such as tear-and-share mozzarella bread with wild garlic aioli, padron peppers or crispy tortillas with guacamole. Small plates include courgette and heritage tomato tostada with lemon ricotta, patatas bravas and yellowtail ceviche with blood orange.
Tacos form a central part of the offering, with fillings such as short rib, charred red pepper or grilled prawn, while larger dishes from the grill include crispy chicken wings, charred whole bream and a 300g dry-aged bavette steak, with the option to add spicy sauces.
On Sundays, the menu shifts to include roasts alongside the usual starters, with options such as pork, beef or a feta and spinach stuffed field mushroom, all served with roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, vegetables and gravy. A children’s roast is also available. Desserts range from vanilla panna cotta and chocolate brownie to mango and chilli paleta, a frozen Mexican ice lolly.
Drinks are a strong focus, with cocktails such as a prickly pear margarita or Moscow mule, alongside beers, wines, spirits and juices. A wide selection of tequilas and mezcals sits alongside low and non-alcoholic options.
