Nestled in the heart of Abergavenny, The Gaff is a lively neighbourhood restaurant led by chef-owner Dan Saunders. The kitchen focuses on flavour-driven cooking with a menu designed for sharing, blending small plates and larger dishes that showcase seasonal ingredients and global influences. The menu evolves weekly to reflect the best produce available, offering a relaxed way for diners to explore a variety of bold, thoughtfully balanced flavours.
The restaurant is housed within three converted sheds, creating a bright and airy dining space with high ceilings and a contemporary feel. Artwork by local artist Pete Bryden adds colour and character throughout the room. In warmer months, guests can also dine outside in the courtyard, where surrounding greenery and trees create a peaceful spot for alfresco meals.
The menu encourages sharing, with a mix of snacks, small plates and larger dishes. Diners might begin with black treacle and stout sourdough served with Marmite butter or raw oysters dressed with soy and ginger. Small plates could include beef kofta with tomato and chilli jam, scallops with asparagus sauce, gnocchi and courgette, or cod paired with roast cauliflower, capers and raisins.
Desserts continue the same flavour-led approach, with options such as strawberries served with cheesecake mousse and strawberry sorbet, steamed treacle and marmalade pudding with custard and Earl Grey ice cream, or a classic Black Forest gateau.
During the week, the restaurant runs a popular Lunch Club where guests can choose three dishes from the menu. On Sundays, diners can order from the a la carte menu or opt for one of the restaurant’s traditional roast dinners served with all the trimmings. The courtyard terrace is dog-friendly, the dining space is fully accessible for wheelchair users and the kitchen is happy to accommodate dietary requirements where possible.
