Wrapped around a busy corner in the centre of genteel Ilkley, this handsome 18th-century townhouse has had a welcome refurbishment and is deservedly enjoying its moment in the sun. Salvaged features include scrubbed oak floors, stunning arched windows and a grand fireplace (complete with a roaring open grate) at one end of the elegant bar. Whilst the vibe is traditional, there are also some contemporary touches in the form of monster light fittings and funky tartan-wool upholstery. A value-for-money menu features succulent Aberdeen Angus burgers with piping-hot skinny fries and a Yorkshire platter heaving with locally made pork pie, cheeses and ham off the bone, although chalked-up pub classics such as steak and ale pie or fish and chips are also popular. An extensive list of speciality bottled beers and seven local cask ales keep the boozers happy.
