The Captain's Wife in Penarth is a country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character. Our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

The Captain's Wife was originally Sully House, a house originally owned by a captain. Legend has it that when his wife died, her body was kept in a box that was mistaken for treasure and stolen. A small fleet of fishing vessels were located at Swanbridge harbour and it is likely that that the row of cottages, that became the pub, were later the traditional homes of the local fishermen and their families.

Right on the shore overlooking the waters of the Bristol Channel, The Captain's Wife has a good tale to tell. Pirates and smugglers visited Sully Island which can be reached (with care) from the pub during low tide.

Avoid this inhumane pub

Appalling, despicable, cruel, inhumane treatment from this pub to endanger the lives of the resident doves by blocking up the dovecote. In winter. With no alternative shelter, in this weather. There may also be babies starving to death inside. And of course it must have been done illegally as you didnt try other options first (rehoming). Manager called police on rescuers and won't cooperate. Look for other reviews on Facebook, Google and trip adviser. Avoid!!
