The Captain Darling has established itself as a welcoming social hub in Stockbridge, bringing together the best of traditional pub culture with the finesse of a modern British restaurant. Located on Hamilton Place, this charming spot takes its name from a beloved character in the BBC sitcom Blackadder, setting the tone for its approachable yet sophisticated atmosphere.
The restaurant is helmed by celebrated Edinburgh chef Scott Smith, formerly of the award-winning Fhior restaurant, who has partnered with The Òir Group to create something genuinely special. The group, who are also behind Lucky Yu on Broughton Street and Bodega on Leith Walk, have focused their efforts on creating a proper pub that's integrated into the heart of the community.
Smith's approach focuses on classic, well-made seasonal dishes that prioritise flavour over gastropub pretensions. The menu features traditional pub favourites elevated with skillful technique, including staples such as a prawn cocktail and handmade savoury pies.
A standout feature is the restaurant's grill section, where a rotating selection of meats are cooked over coals, from Scottish lamb cutlets to bavette steak and rare-breed pork chops. It also offers a hearty Sunday roast centred around a magnificent porchetta centrepiece, although you can also find chicken, beef and veggie options on offer instead.
In keeping with its 'everyone's welcome' ethos, The Captain Darling serves a 'workers lunch' menu featuring classic pub dishes at a reduced price, from a steak sandwich with chips, to sausage and mash.
The interiors reflect the restaurant's commitment to being a true neighbourhood local. The space is relaxed and comfortable, with a dedicated bar space alongside a dining area. The design balances the warmth of a traditional pub with contemporary touches, creating an environment that feels both homely yet special.
Everyone is welcome, including four-legged friends, and operates seven days a week from lunchtime until late.
