Located on Chester Road in Stretford, Manchester, Stretford Canteen is a family-run bistro offering a blend of classic French and traditional British cuisine. The restaurant was founded by Josephine Sandwith and Dean Taylor, drawing inspiration from Josephine’s parents, who operated the well-known Manchester restaurant Beaujolais for over three decades.
Stretford Canteen began as a pop-up dining concept in 2016, hosted at a local café called Pines Pantry. After several years of supper clubs and mobile catering, the team opened their first permanent venue at the front of Stretford Mall in 2022. The restaurant is designed to be intimate and welcoming, with seating for around 24 guests and a décor that includes antique French furniture and a 1920s Parisian bar station.
The menu changes regularly to reflect seasonal availability and is built around locally sourced ingredients. Dishes typically include a mix of small plates, sides and desserts, with examples such as panisse with tarragon mayonnaise, beef short rib with celeriac purée, and mushroom and potato pavé. The restaurant also offers daytime options like buckwheat galettes, croques, and French onion soup, depending on the day’s menu.
Stretford Canteen is known for its commitment to sustainability and works with regional producers and growers to curate its offerings. The wine list features selections from across Europe, with a particular emphasis on French varietals.
Operating hours vary throughout the week, with evening service from Wednesday to Friday and extended hours on weekends. The restaurant continues to host special dining events and supper clubs, maintaining its original spirit of community-focused hospitality
