About

Spice Village Tooting is a true institution, located right at the heart of London’s Pakistani culinary epicentre. Specialising in elegant Pakistani cuisine, but with nods to many neighbouring ones, this relaxed family-friendly restaurant has enough choice for everyone to enjoy. Started by brothers Nasir and Suleman, the restaurant now boasts a sister branch in Southall, as well as one of London’s best catering companies. The food at Spice Village is inspired by the comfort food they grew up on, as well as various regional delicacies from around Pakistan.

The menu at Spice Village Tooting caters to vegans, vegetarians, pescetarians and meat-eaters, with starts and mains for each. Start with poppadoms while you peruse the various options. Onion bhajis, vegetable samosas and chana chaat are great for vegans and veggies, while tandoori king prawns are a must for anyone into seafood. Meatier options include lamb and chicken kebabs, as well as an all-encompassing mixed grill platter for four.

For mains, choose from classic staples like butter chicken, tikka masala, lamb rogan josh or saag paneer, or more unusual signature dishes like lamb karahi (cooked on the bone) or the house dal makhni, rich with butter and cream. Sharing platters are available, perfect for families or groups of five or ten. These include highlights from each part of the menu and are a great way to try as many dishes as possible.

While Spice Village Tooting doesn’t serve alcohol, there are mocktails available. These include virgin pina coladas, mojitos and lychee martinis. Aside from this, diners can opt for a classic lassi, with blueberry, salty, sweet and mango options.

The three rooms of the restaurant each have their own vibe and decor, including a wall of famous Pakistani icons. Delivery and catering are also available for larger events or parties. To minimise food miles and improve sustainability, all meat and vegetables used here come from British producers and farmers.

The restaurant was seedy and tired looking. The food was not freshly cooked and tasted nasty. I called the restaurant, on the previous day, to inform them of my garlic allergy and to ask if there was anything on the menu that I could eat. Ali, the manager said he would ask the chef in the morning since it was 2pm and he had already gone home for the day. The naan bread was cold and soggy. My prawn curry looked grey and unappetising. It tasted worse than it looked. The waiter did not ask if I had enjoyed it, since it remained uneaten. Do not eat at Spice Village. Star rating: a generous two out of ten. .
