SquareMeal Review of Salaam Namaste

From the team behind Namaaste Kitchen in Camden, this sleek contemporary Indian serves the needs of touristy Bloomsbury and Russell Square with its blend of smart interiors and “tremendous” cooking. A few traditional curry-house stalwarts pop up here and there, but the emphasis is on more innovative ideas and regional specialities – so expect biryanis, dhansaks, tandooris and Bukhara grills alongside more upbeat creations. Starters of spiced scallops with mango salsa or home-smoked duck breast with tamarind potato salad might precede jumbo crab vindaloo, dhaba gosht (goat curry with potatoes) or pan-seared tilapia with caramelised onion sauce and aubergines. Dishes from Kerala and Goa also feature, while vegetables (including “outstanding” makhani dhal) are a cut above the norm. Buffet lunches are aimed at local students, workers and back-packing tourists. Very decent house wine and unusual cocktails too.

Service was slow…! Food was average. We had a hair in a poppadum and they just said “sorry” …did not offer anything else. Also, when they asked if we'd like chutneys and popadums they delivered 2 portions and it was not complimentary! It was expensive pre starter! Not freshly made as had a funny tast to to some. The chutneys were very average. Could do so much better! We had gone for a special occasion and were all dressed up. However there were customers who came in with shorts! At least long trousers for men should be appropriate. Improvements can be made.

acurried Xmas meal to remember
4 of us had an excellent meal in mid-December. We ignored the buffet and the set meal 19.95 was superb. Tremendous Bengali and North Indian cooking, outstanding makhani dal, well sauced meats and dishes. Even the Indian red wine was good but the Prosecco was seriously overpriced, Charming service but they do like you to be out by 2.30 though to be fair we were not told that until 4 pm. Highly recommended.
