Tucked away in the Gloucestershire village of Newnham on Severn, Post is a bottleshop, neighbourhood hub, and a place where the menu truly reflects the rhythm of the seasons. With chef Fred Page at the helm, diners can expect a blackboard menu that changes with what’s fresh from the fields, farms and waters nearby.
The ethos is simple: to cook food that feels rooted in its surroundings. Much of the produce comes straight from Post’s own smallholding, The Three Doves, where heritage vegetables, herbs and flowers are nurtured by Penny and Lois before making their way – often the same day – into the kitchen and onto the tables. What isn’t grown on-site comes from trusted local producers: mushrooms from Forest of Dean Mushrooms, regenerative shellfish from Welsh ocean farm Câr-y-Môr, or meat from Plump Hill and Huntsham Court Farms, often butchered in-house to ensure nothing goes to waste.
Lunch and dinner are served Thursday to Sunday, with reservations recommended, though there’s always space for those dropping in for a glass of wine and a bar snack – perhaps fried sardines with ranch dressing or a scallop in its shell with roe butter. Sundays, however, are special: à la carte is put aside in favour of a three-course sharing feast, Post’s spin on the Sunday roast. Expect generous platters served family-style, built around what’s best that week.
The drinks menu is as carefully curated as the food. Local ciders and wines from nearby Kingsthorne Wine Estates sit alongside small-scale European bottles chosen for their character and sustainability. The coffee, roasted in Ross-on-Wye, comes from James Gourmet Coffee, known for direct trade relationships with farmers.
Inside, the restaurant feels personal and creative. Still life paintings by local artist Kirsten Elswood hang on the walls, bread baskets are handwoven by local craftspeople, and tableware is shaped by potters from The Grange Village. The atmosphere is warm, modern, and grounded in community.
Whether you’re here for a lingering dinner, a Sunday feast with family, or simply a drink and a bite with friends, Post offers a dining experience that captures the spirit of Gloucestershire: seasonal, sustainable, and deeply welcoming.
