Perro is chef Matt Wilden's exciting venture in Birmingham's Kings Court, Kings Heath - a cosy 12-cover space serving sandos by day and Mexican small plates by night. Opened in July 2025, this intimate neighbourhood restaurant and bar showcases Wilden's passion for Mexican cuisine with a refreshingly honest approach.
Renowned Birmingham chef Matt Wilden - who made his name at the former pizzeria POLI and taco pop-up Piñata - brings another 'P'-themed project to the city with Perro, where he hopes to deliver something genuinely unique to Kings Heath's dining scene.
What sets Perro apart is its thoughtful dual identity. By day, it offers a more casual grab-and-go experience for the working crowd. Expect a mix of stacked deli sandos, Vietnamese iced coffees, house-baked goods, and rotating seasonal agua frescas to go.
But then, as night falls, Perro transforms into an intimate, low-lit 12-seater restaurant and bar. While the atmosphere is pitched as casual and fun, the food itself reflects the complexity of Mexican cuisine. Expect to see an ever-changing list of tacos on the menu, from chorizo and potato to beans and cheese, plus other authentic dishes such as chilaquiles verde topped with a fried egg, pink onions, jalapeño, feta, crema and lime.
The drinks programme is equally impressive, with cocktails curated by award-winning bartender Katie Rouse (Couch), complemented by natural wines that pair beautifully with the Mexican-inspired small plates. On Friday and Saturday nights, Perro extends its hours, serving snacks alongside the expertly crafted cocktail selection.
Wilden also wants the space to be used as a community-driven base for events and other activations throughout the year, from food to music, fashion and art. As he describes it: 'At its heart, Perro is about creative people supporting creative people.'
