Patisserie Valerie Old Compton Street

SquareMeal Review of Patisserie Valerie Old Compton Street

From bohemian beginnings in 1920s Soho, Patisserie Valerie’s unstoppable rise has seen the group grow to some 49 outlets & counting. The original Madame Valerie would doubtless be glad to see how far word has spread of her famous pastrywork (there are now branches in Cambridge, Leeds, Wolverhampton & beyond), though one suspects she might detect a dip in quality. Patisserie Valerie is good at recreating that all-important continental atmosphere (even in new builds), which makes it a pleasingly buzzy place for a croissant or brioche with morning coffee. Pastries & bigger breakfasts (eggs Benedict, full English et al) give way to casual lunches such as Greek salad, fishcakes or a tuna club melt, while the afternoon is best devoted to cream-filled gâteaux, sugary doughnuts & French tarts.

Mr. James C

Take Away Service Slipping at This Established Cake Shop.
18 February 2015
After being double charged a year or so ago at The Holland Park Avenue branch we are a bit on our guard on dealing with this chain. The cakes never seem to change but taste competently & reliably produced though in todays competitive Eurostar Europe please remember we have tasted 100s cake shops from Brugge to Paris & in between. Our latest visit was marred by the arising of that peculiar confrontational attitude that English folks sometimes encounter in their native Capital City. Perfectly polite requests were met with huffing, puffing, tut tutting, and an "on strike"attitude. Everything it seemed from a cup of tap water to a plastic fork was too much & beyond the pail. The feeling of dagger stares from seated customers boring into ones back were not helpful either. In fact it got our backs up -we are the customers remember-what allows the habituees of this so so cake shop such a patronising attitude? We will never know as weve never fancied wasting time sitting down to eat inside here. Too busy as usual to loaf around in Soho. Our eagle eyes also noticed bag type people seated outside being un shooed away. The Black Forest Cake was stale dry & messy. At £3 odd what did we expect. A Soho veteran perhaps a bit past sell by?
