SquareMeal Review of Pant-y-Gwydr

Swansea has been abuzz following the arrival of this sassy new French restaurant, where genuine Gallic food, polished service & an uncluttered, stylish interior (think bare wood, plus leather sofas & a wood burner) combine to produce something rather memorable. Factor in superb value for money (you can get steak & chips for under a tenner) & it’s easy to see why people keep coming back for more. The menu runs from rustic offerings including traditional fish soup & Toulouse-style cassoulet, through to more cheffed-up treats such as a warm salad of French wood pigeon, oyster mushrooms & pine kernels or pan-fried Dorset veal cutlet with a Calvados, cream & mushroom sauce. The cheeseboard is excellent, likewise desserts such as ‘oeuf à la coque’ or chocolate tart & sorbet with white chocolate mousse.

Pant-Y-Gwydr is a restaurant that has been serving traditional French recipes since 2010. With great knowledge of classical and regional French cuisine, the team have crafted a growing repertoire of their very own original recipes, and branched out to offering more mouthwatering vegan dishes. The restaurant does like to use as many Welsh and British ingredients wherever possible, but the team are fans of using French specialist ingredients in order to retain an authentic experience for customers. Piment d'Espelette is sourced from the Basque country and pink onions from Brittany, whilst single origin chocolates and the vanilla in the desserts come from farther afield.

First up on the starters is the soupe de poisson, a traditional fish soup with whole pieces of white fish – as you might find served in the port of Marseille, then, there are the mussels cooked in a white wine sauce with celery and garlic, and snails from Burgundy with a potato case and a garlic butter. Scallops, veal sweetbreads and French onion soup are also all on the menu. For vegans, or those looking to enjoy a plant based starter, try the vegan rainbow layer cake with button mushrooms, potatoes, carrot, spinach, chervil, tarragon and chives. Main dishes are equally as rich in flavour – from the pan-roasted duck breast with maize risotto, Pant-y-Gwydr popcorn, parmesan milk and celery, and fillet of beef with toast, pâté, truffle and truffle essence and a classic Madeira sauce to the grilled fillet of hake with fresh tomato dressing and triple cooked chips.

Tying things up nicely are the delicious desserts on offer, like the caramelised apple tart served warm with Pant-y-Gwydr vanilla ice cream or chocolate egg with chocolate mousse and crème and white chocolate sorbet.
