About

Housed in an elegantly restored Grade II-listed building, No. 23 is a vibrant neighbourhood eatery located in Uppingham, Rutland. The restaurant serves Mediterranean-inspired dishes using locally sourced produce.

The building is over 300 years old and occupies a lovely position in the market town, voted the best place to live in the Midlands by The Times. The lovingly returned period interiors - with muted sage tones, antiqued mirrors, bespoke marble bar and warm wood accents - create a relaxed yet refined atmosphere. Outside, a sheltered garden room and terrace promise outdoor dining and private function space.

Led by head chef Dan Smith (formerly of Claridge’s, Hambleton Hall and The Olive Branch) the kitchen delivers a Mediterranean-inspired menu that draws on Italy, Spain, France, Morocco and Rutland’s own produce. Ingredients are primarily sourced locally: meat from the owners’ Great Easton farm and fish, fruit and vegetables from nearby market traders each Friday. That commitment extends to house-made pasta, breads, desserts and sauces, all produced daily using a specialist pasta machine.

Diners can choose from sharing plates like honey & red-wine chorizo and focaccia with sunblushed tomato butter, or starters like seared scallops with escabeche tapioca crisp and tempura broccoli. There are also freshly made pasta dishes such as wild-mushroom truffle rigatoni or salmon fettuccine and main courses like roast cod loin, chicken parmigiana and wild halibut. Desserts include apple tarte tatin and chocolate cherry globe.

The extensive drinks list boasts refined cocktails and a curated wine selection featuring old-world regions and lesser-known gems like Georgian and Slovenian bottles. No. 23 has a private dining space seating ten and a planned terrace area for warmer months.

No. 23 offers Mediterranean flair, local character and convivial ambience. It’s ideal for leisurely lunches, evening gatherings, special celebrations or simply a memorable meal at the heart of Rutland.
