‘It’s our duty’: Sandwich Sandwich pledges free meals to those in need

Sandwich Sandwich has pledged to give free meals to those struggling financially, with support offered indefinitely and at no extra cost.

In a statement posted on Instagram, the team behind the Bristol-born sandwich shop invited anyone who’s struggling in January and beyond to reach out to their customer service team. The post read: ‘January is a hard month and in general it's getting harder for too many people [...] the thought of anyone having to go hungry in January is deeply upsetting’.

Sandwich Sandwich revealed that it offered a similar support scheme over Christmas by giving out sandwiches for 24 hours to people in need of food. However, the business was quick to acknowledge that the offering wasn’t enough to help those who need regular support.

The team is urging those in need to get in touch with customer service, promising that they will never ask for any details about their situation and that privacy is guaranteed for anyone who visits the store.

They shared an email address in the post stating: 'If you're struggling and we can help by feeding you at no cost until you're back on your feet, please reach out to: customerservice@sandwichsandwich.co.uk.'

The statement ended: ‘If a couple of sandwiches a day can ease the burden, even in the smallest way imaginable, then I feel like it’s our duty to do so.'

Sandwich Sandwich also stressed that the initiative doesn't have an expiration date. People can reach out in their own time and at their own discretion, and shouldn't worry about the offer of free meals suddenly disappearing.

‘Alternatively, if you or someone else doesn’t feel comfortable reaching out yet, there’s no rush. This offer of support isn’t going anywhere.’

An overwhelming response

Within the first 24 hours of posting, a team member commented on the original post revealing that they’d already received 100 responses from people offering to help deliver food, donate or even help out in store.

‘You lot really are the best community in the world. I’ve had over 100 requests from people offering to help deliver food, paying it forward, donating or even making sandwiches in store. I’m blown away at just how incredible you all are.’

One user asked if the shop is offering a ‘pay it forward’ style scheme, whereby a customer can buy a sandwich for themself and one for someone in need. While this doesn’t seem to be possible yet, Sandwich Sandwich replied that it’s something they're considering. ‘It’s certainly something we’ll look into — what a wonderful suggestion,’ they replied.

About Sandwich Sandwich

Sandwich Sandwich was originally launched by Josh Kleiner with his dad and brother in Bristol in 2012. Famed for its hefty portion sizes and whacky fillings, the shop has since expanded from Bristol to London, opening its hugely-popular City location in 2024.

It now also has sites on Tottenham Court Road and Mark Lane near Tower Bridge, as well as two Bristol locations: Clifton and Old City.
