Tucked away on Wardour Street in the heart of Soho, Kanpai Classic is a sleek Japanese steakhouse that specialises in top-quality Wagyu beef and laid-back luxury. Whether you're a seasoned Wagyu fan or just curious to try it, this is one of the best spots in London to get your steak fix.
Originally opened in 2005, Kanpai Classic boasts more than 20 years experience serving expertly grilled Wagyu by a team of skilled chefs. The restaurant pays homage to the art of yakiniku - meaning 'grilled meat' - a core pillar of Japanese cuisine in which premium cuts are prepared, carved and cooked on a hot charcoal grill by professional chefs in front of guests.
The star of the show is their A5-grade Wagyu, flown in from Japan and grilled to perfection in a selection of a la carte sharing dishes, from sushi to steak tartare. There is also a yakiniku feast selection, whicn includes beef tongue, four slices of premium Wagyu cuts and Japanese A5 grade Wagyu steak, allowing you to try the speciality meat in a variety of forms.
Rice forms a major part of the experience. The restaurant uses premium Nanatsuboshi rice for its texture and flavour, offering an elevated rice selection, from sweetcorn and scallop to salmon and salmon roe.
Prefer someone to do the ordering for you? Kanpai Classic offers an omakase menu featuring a selection of chef's choice dishes.
Drinks-wise, Kanpai Classic offers a wide selection of Japanese sake, including award-winners, plus wines and cocktails that pair perfectly with the food. The vibe is stylish but relaxed, with warm lighting and a modern Japanese aesthetic that makes it ideal for date nights, dinners with friends, or even a special celebration.
If you’re after something more private, there’s a cosy dining room tucked away for small groups - perfect for birthdays or business dinners.
