One thing Hawkshead is well-known for is its cosy pubs. Located primarily on the outskirts of the village, these inns are great for a quick drink or a long evening of feasting. The specialty, as with many restaurants in and around Cumbria, is beef, so be sure to order it if you eat meat. Other staples of the area include fish from the local market, often served in a bouillabaisse.

When it comes to activities in and around Hawkshead, there’s no shortage. History enthusiasts should visit Wray Castle, which offers turrets, towers, period dress, castle building play areas, hidden treasure and you can even arrive by boat (the boat from Ambleside drops you off at the castle’s private jetty).

If the weather is good, Lake Windermere is a must when visiting Hawkshead. It’s one of the most popular lakes in the Lake District and the largest in England. Take a boat ride on the lake and bring your camera - the views are absolutely stunning. If you have kids that need to burn some energy, then there are adventure playgrounds galore.

Before you leave Hawkshead, however, be sure to visit one of the gift shops for some souvenirs. Of the possible souvenirs, locals will almost certainly recommend you pick up a jar of relish, as Hawkshead has some of the best in the country. We recommend you also stock up on some cakes from one of the tearooms, either to bring home to your friends or to enjoy on the train ride home (we won’t judge).
