You’d never know this fine-looking late-Victorian boozer was actually a hotel were it not for the ‘no vacancy’ sign above the door or the telling motto – ‘hops and chops, cuvées and duvets’. Inside, it’s everything you might expect, from the snug little nooks, leaded windows and mahogany bar to the hand-pumped ales from Young’s Brewery, craft beers, ciders and global wines to go with an appealing menu of pub classics and more fancy ideas. English charcuterie and ‘market boards’ are true to the pub’s location, while the menu also promises everything from salt beef sandwiches and kedgeree fishcakes to T-bone steaks with triple-cooked chips, beer-battered cod and lamb shank pie topped with creamy mash. This being Smithfield, there are meaty breakfasts too – try ‘the City boy’ with lamb’s kidneys, minute steak, calf’s liver and all the trimmings, plus a pint of London stout.
