About

Part of a nationwide group of hotels and restaurants, Bistro du Vin Winchester is a relaxed French bistro-style restaurant rooted in classic provincial cooking with traditional flavours, seasonal produce and straightforward execution. The dining style is informal but polished, with an emphasis on wine, sharing starters, hearty mains and familiar desserts. The atmosphere feels warm and softly continental, with the sense of a neighbourhood Parisian bistro translated into a Winchester setting.

Inside, the space is understated and welcoming, with a design language that favours dark woods, crisp table settings and softly lit interiors. With pastel blue-green walls and French panelling, it offers a simple, comfortable aesthetic that puts the focus firmly on food and wine.

You’ll find multiple menus to choose from, often including great value deals. The main menu at Bistro du Vin Winchester begins with a series of amuse bouche and small plates, including Lucques olives, smoked almonds, saucisson sec and warm pain d’épi with Maison Bordier butter. More substantial starters include pistou soup, salmon rillettes, ham hock terrine with sauce gribiche, and Dorset crab quiche with Gruyère. There’s also a classic beef tartare served with capers, gherkins and shallots, alongside oysters, sardines and scampi in a Provençal-style tomato and pastis sauce.

Mains at Bistro du Vin continue in a similar vein, focusing on French staples and robust flavours. Entrecôte au poivre is a central offering, alongside spatchcock poussin with Basquaise sauce and spiced rump of lamb with couscous and tahini yoghurt. Vegetarian options, meanwhile, include tempura broccoli with romesco sauce and a composed house salad with quinoa and edamame, with optional additions such as chicken or tiger prawns.

Afternoon tea, breakfast and a tasting menu are also available, the latter pairing dishes with wines chosen by the sommelier, reinforcing the venue’s strong focus on classic French dining and wine matching. Second time here and definitely the last

I was here for a business lunch here on Tuesday, as I have dined here before. It was embarrassingly dreadful. The waiter appeared to be somewhat inexperienced and out of his depth ( I got the feeling that they were understaffed). The pigeon was extremely chewy as it had been overcooked, the salmon was overcooked (the skin should be crispy, not the flesh!), the pork was fatty and the crackling not crispy in the slightest, being inedible. The waiter didn't even comment about me not eating most of my main course. I have been a chef and can tell you that the pigeon and pork where not cooked freshly! What is probably more concerning is that I contacted the hotel and they didn't even reply. If you understand and enjoy your food certinly avoid eating here at lunch time at the moment as they are clearly experiencing issues they are not redressing. The Hotel du Vin group subsequently contacted me asking for details about their Winchester bistro, but still no contact from Winchester. How bad is that?.....They clearly don't care.

Winchester is the flagship and although I haven’t visited, I have walked to HdV in Henley on Thames countless times where we have had the good fortune to benefit from the best chefs in the group on rare occasions. Staff get shunted around the branches as needed resulting in peaks and troughs. We have been pleased to bring friends sometimes and at other times e.g. one New Year’s Day evening we were somewhat embarrassed. For all the right reasons, I can recall a starter of sea trout and smoked salmon raviolo which was knockout. The fish encased in the most perfectly cooked wafer thin pasta was presented elegantly in a delicate butter sauce with a scattering of concasse tomatoes. The first time I ordered this dish it was of a standard to challenge any Michelin starred chef, but alas it wasn’t to be repeated. Menus on the whole sound good, and they have some decent ingredients to work with, but I would suggest ordering carefully by selecting the less ambitious sounding dishes (perhaps from the simpler classic choices) which tend to be more dependable. Wines can suit most wallets, and will often impress from a bank embracing worldwide options but predictably major on French. Food on the other hand is not as good value for the quality.

I love this place. Excellent atmosphere, super service and good food. I wonder at times if the portions aren't getting a little small though? I am sure they used to be bigger or am I just greedy for the great food ? The wine list is pretty good, if a little on the pricey side for some of them, but there is something there for everyones taste. You cant beat a balmy afternoon in the walled garden with a bottle of champagne…
