Mother’s Day: where to take your mum for breakfast in London

'Breakfast is the most important meal of the day,' we're sure your mother told you while growing up. It's therefore the ideal way to treat your mum for Mother's Day. Here's our pick of the best places to go

Kalifornia Kitchen, Soho

Ok, so this one is pretty pink and fluffy (it is the brainchild of Instagram micro-influencer Loui Blake after all), so expect pink galore, neon signage and foliage-lined walls. It also serves up a lovely vegan breakfast – the beetroot puree on sourdough is as Instagrammable as the interiors. So if you want to give your mum a slice of millennial London, this is just the spot.

Isabel, Notting Hill

This is the place to truly impress mummy dearest (and perhaps get her to contribute towards the bill!), with its bowler-hatted doorman, copper door and fabulously beautiful dining room. It features more copper details, glossy monochrome tables and a ceiling studded with shiny brass discs, plus a multi-coloured geometric carpet like a giant op-art installation. Food is delicious too. Toasted ham and cheese croissant, scrambled eggs with salmon or a fruit and yoghurt bowl will start the day off nicely – so will a glass of bubbly.

Aqua Shard, London Bridge

Sky-high views don’t always come with a sky-high price tag, but it’s your mother’s special day, so why not splash out a bit anyway? A visit to Aqua Shard is well worth it both for the vistas and the breakfast. Set weekend menus start at £29pp for breakfast or £44 for brunch, and the cocktail list boasts signature serves that won’t break the bank.

The Wolseley, Piccadilly

This posh spot serves up an all-conquering breakfast in truly luxe surroundings. You mum will appreciate the VIP treatment all guests receive here while tucking into a bowl of Birchermuesli, a crispy bacon roll or a full fry-up. Another plus will be that she’ll be too busy spotting the occasional celeb to tell you off for your poor life choices.

Chicama, Chelsea

If you’re looking for something a little untraditional, this seafood-led Peruvian serves up a brunch that goes beyond your usual eggs royale. Diners can pick from specials including sweetcorn pancakes topped with crab, ají panca hollandaise and pickled chili, or fish and spiced red cabbage stuffed in a brioche bun. Does your mum have a sweet tooth? Have her try the banana and yuzu ice cream.

Bluebird, Chelsea

If your mum is a Made in Chelsea fan, she’ll appreciate a visit to this local institution. Should the weather be alright, the courtyard is also ideal for people-watching and getting some vitamin D. Two or three-course weekend brunches are available, with dishes including the likes of New Yorker eggs with pastrami and pickled eggs, and vanilla cheesecake with Kentish strawberries.

Foxlow, Balham, Soho, Clerkenwell

If your mum is sick to the core of the thought of a dainty, healthy breakfast in a pastel-coloured, flower-explosion of a café, and instead prefers a big, greasy fry-up in handsome surroundings, look no further than one of Foxlow’s location across town. Dishes such as fried chicken and waffles; egg and bacon poutine with a side of chips and gravy; or steak served with spice-roasted tomatoes and eggs any way will go down well with the sons, too. The more traditional fry-up is of course available.

Daylesford Organic, Notting Hill

This is a great place to start a day of perusing pastel houses in Notting Hill followed by antique shopping on Portebello Road Market. It will leave you feeling good inside and out: kick-start your meal with a wellness shot blending turmeric and ginger, before tucking in to a menu of seasonally changing organic fare. Perhaps porridge topped with seasonal fruit and honey will take your fancy, or maybe scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and a slice of toasted sourdough.

Farmacy, Notting Hill

Veganism is not just for millennials, so if you’re on the hunt for a really good plant-based breakfast, Notting Hill’s shrubbed-up yummy mummy mecca will hit the spot. Feast on dishes such as chocolate chip waffles and protein ‘omelettes’ (a chickpea pancakes filled with roasted butternut squash, avocado, chard and harissa). The restaurant is also offering a special Mother’s Day plant-based high tea. Featuring CBD-infused cocktails and chocolates, the tea comes presented on a foliage-covered tea stand.
