Chef Richard Guest and manager Cedric Chirossel made their names at Taunton’s auspicious Castle Hotel before setting up this pint-sized neighbourhood eatery snuggled away in a nearby courtyard. Hard surfaces mean plenty of noise and happy chatter in the weeny, bistro-style dining room, service keeps the mood upbeat and the food is guaranteed to put smiles on faces. Expect a lively mix of British, European and Asian influences brought together in assertive, pitch-perfect dishes ranging from smoked eel and scrambled duck egg or whole lemon sole with runner beans and samphire to Thai-style avocado and peanut salad, pork saltimbocca or homemade boudin noir with caramelised apples. For afters, consider raspberry vacherin with praline or cherry Bakewell tart. Roald Dahl fans might like to know that the restaurant’s name references food-loving Augustus Gloop in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
