In the heart of the city overlooking Parker’s Piece, University Arms offers one of Cambridge’s most distinguished settings for private dining. As the city’s oldest hotel, it pairs Edwardian elegance with a contemporary sensibility, creating a venue that feels impressive but current - well suited to milestone celebrations, academic dinners or corporate gatherings that require both scale and polish.
At the centre of its private events offering is the Ballroom, a wood-panelled hall that forms part of Cambridge’s architectural heritage. Stained-glass windows, decorated with college crests, flood the room with natural light and frame views across Parker’s Piece. The space accommodates up to 180 guests seated or 200 standing, making it ideal for larger private dinners, award evenings or formal receptions. Despite its size, the hotel prides itself on tailoring each layout so the room never feels cavernous, with menus and table settings curated to match the tone of the event.
For more intimate occasions, the Ballroom can be divided by a solid oak partition into two smaller rooms: The Crick and The Watson. Named after James Watson and Francis Crick, who discovered the structure of DNA in Cambridge in 1953, these spaces retain the elegance of the main hall but at a more conversational scale. The Crick hosts up to 90 guests and suits executive meetings, lectures and private dinners, while The Watson accommodates up to 70 guests and works particularly well for smaller gatherings.
Catering is handled in-house with the same attention to detail. The culinary team crafts bespoke menus, but guests can also draw inspiration from Parker’s Tavern, the hotel’s English brasserie. Dishes are all about British ingredients, from Cley House smoked salmon with chive cream to ham hock croquettes with celeriac remoulade. Mains include Cambridge sausage and mash or oven-roasted Norfolk chicken, while desserts such as Cambridge burnt cream and chocolate mousse complete the meal on a suitably classic note.
