Hailed as the oldest town in the UK, Colchester in Essex attracts more than 4 million visitors each year and was once the capital of Roman Britain. One of the main crowd pleasers has to be Colchester Zoo which provides a wonderful day out for all the family whilst the town’s other big attraction is Colchester Castle, the largest Norman keep in Europe which dates back to 1096. The town boasts a magnificent historical past but is also a thriving modern day town centre where a good combination of independent shops and boutiques sit alongside well known High Street brands. Colchester boasts a bustling restaurant and café scene with some great choices on offer, particularly within the town centre, whilst some superb traditional pubs are found throughout the town and its surrounding areas.
