Three iconic London hotels to auction off hundreds of years’ worth of furniture and art

Three of London’s most famous hotels - Claridge’s, The Berkeley and The Connaught - will be auctioning off hundreds of assets over the course of three separate auctions. The Maybourne Group, which owns all three hotels, has decided to auction a huge archive of old items, some of which date back over 100 years.

The auctions include everything from hotel furniture, art pieces specifically commissioned for the hotel, lighting, crockery and more.

Among the 2068 lots you’ll find some pieces of London hotel history, including unique lighting pieces from all three hotels, furniture and items from both iterations of The Berkeley’s iconic Blue Bar, and art deco tub velvet tub chairs handmade for Claridge’s by David Linley - the royal furniture designer and cousin of King Charles III.

There are also furniture pieces from renowned interior designer David Collins, original artworks by Gerald Norden, Boris Pastoukhodd and William Burns, and a set of crested crockery, originally produced for Claridge’s by Chommette 1884.

The items have been split into three separate timed auctions, ending at 11am on 27 July, 3 August and 10 August respectively. Bids are already open, and the entire catalogue is available to browse online, so click the link if you want to browse, or if you fancy owning a piece of London hotel history.

A spokesperson from Maybourne said: ‘As a group with heritage buildings and brands, we have naturally built-up a collection of surplus pieces over the years.

‘We have appointed a leading auction company – NCM Auctions – to ensure this important and sizeable collection is sold responsibly and with a sustainable and community-focussed approach. We are delighted to be giving these items a second life and crucially, diverting them from landfill.’
