Harrods are selling a £28 sandwich, and customers are outraged

Harrods is selling a takeaway sandwich for a whopping £28, and customers are struggling to come to terms with the price of it.

The sandwich is filled with some of the world's most expensive ingredients, so it’s no wonder that this lunchtime treat has racked up such a hefty price tag. One of the main features is the Wagyu beef, which is usually imported from Japan, and can cost hundreds of pounds per kilo. Alongside this, the sandwich also has porcini mushrooms, gold mustard mayonnaise, rocket, braised onions and truffle butter.

Truffle is also known as one of the most expensive ingredients worldwide, with truffles sometimes fetching up to four figures per kilo.

Also on the sandwich counter is a Wagyu katsu sando available for £28, where you can tuck into the same top quality beef, but try it deep fried alongside some mushroom ketchup, BBQ sauce and shredded white cabbage. However in classic sando style, this option comes in at a mere 3-4 inches long.

The sandwich in question has recently been compared to Pret’s cheese and pickle baguette that caused outrage for setting customers back £7.15, which is a fraction of what Harrods is charging.

Whilst some aren’t surprised to see such an expensive sandwich sold at the luxury department store, others have been vocal about their shock. One TikTok user responded to a video of the £28 katsu sandwich saying: 'Regardless of what the food is or where it comes from… NO sandwich is worth £28. Looks bomb tho’.

The rising costs come at an alarming time for customers as the UK is taken hold by the cost of living crisis, with everyone feeling the pinch.

Harrods has always been known for its extravagant products, from designer brands like Chanel and Gucci, to high end homeware, with the food hall being no exception. The food hall boasts the likes of luxury chocolate brands, expensive cheese counters, and even the store's infamous gift hampers. The famous department store has also recently relaunched its Grade-II listed dining hall, alongside new restaurants such as Sushi by MASA and Kinoya Ramen.
