Locals may remember when these premises concealed an unlovely, backstreet drinking den, but following the development of the area and a change of ownership, it now thrives as Roseleaf – a wee,
family-run café/bar with pretty teacups, funky interiors and arguably the best Cullen skink in Edinburgh. Brunch runs right through until 5pm, when the menu offer anything from ‘brekkie burritos’
to spinach risotto, pulled pork buns or warm crispy duck salad with fennel, walnuts, mango and coriander dressing. After that, an extended evening menu moves into the eclectic bistro world for,
say, asparagus with poached egg and béarnaise sauce, ‘flat iron’ steaks or dukkah-spiced rump of lamb on pea spätzle. They also do a wacky assortment of drinks, from cocktails in teapots to
lose-leaf teas and herbal infusions. Friendly staff and a sociable vibe complete a happy picture.
