Paul Noble has been successfully courting Battle’s diners for a few years with his take on accessible Anglo-European food served in unfussy, elegant surrounds. The kitchen is in fine fettle, making
a good fist of its wide-ranging, eager-to-please repertoire. It is comfortably at home with the classics (think confit duck & foie gras terrine, fillet of beef stroganoff or gooseberry &
apple crumble), but also tackles more contemporary ideas including a risotto of blue swimmer crab with tomato oil, rocket & parmesan or a fish mixed grill with braised fennel & black olive
dressing. Steaks from local Sussex cattle are a speciality, ranging from a 6oz rib-eye to chateaubriand for two. The town is famously close to the site of the Battle of Hastings – hence the £10.66
price tag on the bargain two-course lunch.
