Tom and Ed Martin’s swish City eatery always seems to be buzzing, and with good reason. Elegant, pastel-green furniture and light, airy decor set the tone, while the kitchen eschews gimmickry in
favour of satisfying best-of-British fare – from rare-breed Cumbrian steaks to old-school coupes and sundaes. In between, there are plenty of smart ideas aimed at a smart young crowd – perhaps
potted Arbroath smokie with sauce gribiche, seared scallops with braised pig’s cheeks, pear and candied hazelnuts or roast Goosnargh duck breast with caramelised orange jus. Seasonal game also gets
a good airing, witness Yorkshire red grouse served with a giblet and foie-gras sausage, poached cauliflower and brioche crumbs. Slick staff are quick to provide ‘great’ suggestions from the
wide-ranging wine list, while Chiswell’s all-day offer also extends to afternoon tea and excellent-value theatre deals.
Square Meal is proud to be supporting homeless charity StreetSmart in their 2014 campaign, for the sixth year running. StreetSmart works with over 500 restaurants nationwide by adding £1 to every bill throughout November and December, which is donated to local homeless charities.
The venue we chose was the Chiswell Street Dining Rooms, a stones’ throw away from the venue of the workshop, in the heart of the City of London. After hearing our group size and requirements, the events manager allocated us a private room in the Montcalm Hotel within whose premises both the Chiswell Street Dining Rooms and its sister restaurant the Jugged Hare are situated (although we were still ordering off the Chiswell Street menu)...
