Tried & Tested: Twist London

(menu)

We mix and muddle our way through a cocktail-making masterclass.

We like a drop of liquor, we’ll admit it. So when we kicked off a cocktail masterclass at Twist London’s head office by learning how to taste neat gin, we weren’t going to complain.

Our mixer-in-chief Tim begins with a history of cocktails – the first use of the word was in 1860, apparently – while stirring up an Old Fashioned. Damien, a Mad Men fan, looks very happy about this. While we’re sipping on that, we’re handed a Martinez. And then a Pisco Sour. And we’ve not even had a go ourselves yet.

After being taught the mantra, ‘If it’s clear, stir. If it’s opaque, shake,’ we’re split into teams to attempt our own perfect Piscos. Hannah gets the best head, and scores a point.

Next, each team must concoct one signature sip. Damien and Russ end up with an unusual mix of gin, Champagne and basil. Don’t ask. Annica and Millie make a smooth blend of gin, basil and orange. But, once again, Hannah comes out on top, with a winning combination of rum, lime and agave syrup. Delicious.
