Event review: National Television Awards 2014

The small screen's finest were out in force at The O2.

Benedict Cumberbatch, in swimming shorts, in front of the Hollywood sign. That’s an image that will remain with me for quite some time. The Sherlock star was accepting a gong for Radio Times TV Detective live from LA and, judging by the audience’s reaction, it was a heroic victory.

Stars of a similar calibre (and some not so much) came from not so far afield for this year’s National Television Awards. Held at The O2 and hosted by Dermot O’Leary, the ceremony is a proper red-carpet affair. We’re talking Ricky Gervais, Ant and Dec (who won the prestigious Landmark Award) and the cast of Downton Abbey – good old British talent.

We were hosted in one of the hospitality suites that span the circumference of the arena. After a welcome glass of the good stuff, food came thick and fast: mini bagels, haddock fishcakes and mini pies with mash.

The split-level space worked well: the reception area playing host to debates such as X Factor versus Strictly Come Dancing, with the adjoining tiered seating box allowing us to get closer to the action.

Best bit: the duet between X Factor winner Sam Bailey and Michael Bolton that kicked the evening off. What a pair.
