SquareMeal Review of Courthouse Bar and Shoreditch Sky Terrace

Bronze Award

In a grand 1900s Italianate edifice that was once a magistrates court, you can now sip cocktails with impunity in a choice of two bars. This sister to The Courthouse Soho Hotel has retained splendid original features such as mosaic flooring and stained-glass windows. Less appealing – despite an imposing Edwardian-style wooden bar – is the bland mushroom-hued ground-floor lounge. Cells that once held the Krays have been gussied up as claustrophobic private booths. Classic cocktails aside, Courthouse signatures bear names such as Reprieve and Convicted (bourbon, Cointreau, lemon and honey). Bar snacks, served alongside well-priced vino, acquit themselves well, including tangy corned beef and mustard potato fritters with sweet-and-sour marmalade (£5.50). The rooftop Sky Terrace, with its Square Mile views, will undoubtedly be a summertime escape, but in an area bursting with world-beating bars will this smart yet oddly soulless hotel lounge attract the hood’s fun lovin’ criminals? The jury’s out.
