SquareMeal Review of Browns - Bath

Brown’s, a university town fixture, has now extended its reach from Brighton in the south to Glasgow in the north – with further openings on the agenda. There’s clearly mileage in its potted palms, bentwood chairs & a ‘something for everyone’ formula. Alas, readers continue to berate poor service & forgettable food that puts ‘quantity over quality’. Find a good branch or a good day though, & that old warm familiarity returns. The brasserie/grill menu gets it right with a retro offering of burgers, fish pies, lobster tagliatelle & chicken Caesar salads, while pork belly with cauliflower cheese ‘bread & butter pudding’ or cured Trealy Farm ham with figs feel right for today’s budget foodie. Inexpensive cocktails & some interesting wines (Brachetto d’Acqui, Château Musar among others) might surprise you.

About

Over 50 years ago, Browns first opened their doors in the seaside town of Brighton. The food at Browns is always based on classics, along with using seasonal ingredients. Now, Browns restaurants can be found all over the country, and this chain in Bath is a great spot to enjoy some superb dining after a busy day in the city.

Right from breakfast to dinner, with the menu featuring classic British comforts and inventive seasonal creations, you can always enjoy great food at Browns. Indulge in daily deliveries of market fresh fish, exquisite afternoon teas, and traditional Sunday roasts. Catering to diverse tastes, Browns take pride in their bespoke gluten free offerings for breakfast, a la carte, and afternoon tea menus, all accredited by Coeliac UK. The inviting venue is perfect for various occasions, be it intimate dinners, family gatherings, or joyous celebrations, so why not book and enjoy the blend of relaxed and stylish dining, complemented by beautiful bars that serve hand crafted cocktails, selection of fine wines, Champagnes, and artisan spirits to enhance your dining experience.

Begin with a starter of conference pear with dolcelatte and beetroot salad, along with red chicory, baby gem lettuce, candied seeds and a Cabernet Sauvignon vinaigrette, or a rosemary, thyme and garlic baked camembert for two with honey, toasted sourdough, figs, pear, caramelised seeds and green tomato chutney. Main meals include the harissa spiced lamb rack with couscous, preserved lemon, semi-dried tomatoes, mint yoghurt, pomegranate and micro coriander, and a whole lemon sole with brown butter, seaweed, capers, samphire, lemon and sautéed La Ratte potatoes. If you’re finding it hard to choose, enjoy the trio of desserts with a vanilla crème brulée, chocolate fondant with caramelita ice cream, and mango and passion fruit torte.
