Having debuted with two much-lauded branches in west London, before expanding across the capital, it looks as if this swish Chinese chain is just getting started. Shikumen manages to pull off the admirable feat of serving authentic, consistently excellent Cantonese cuisine in smart surroundings at sensible prices. The polished concrete floors and sleek lines of its modern dining rooms are easy on the eye: acres of space between each table suggest ideal business-lunch territory, although families also love the set-up. Dim sum stand-outs include perfectly cooked, translucent crab and prawn dumplings topped with caviar, peerless xiao long bao, and sweet, fluffy venison puffs – although the house signature is Peking duck, carved at the table (the skin is dipped in sugar, while the meat is served with pancakes, steamed buns and, finally, fried noodles). To drink, try one of the excitingly out-there bottles on the well-curated wine list.
