SquareMeal Review of Terrace at the National Theatre

Situated on Level 2 of the National Theatre, The Terrace is not only a go-to alfresco destination with spectacular riverside views, it also does the business in the food and drink stakes. The kitchen deals in global tapas, so graze and nibble on gnocchi with morels and ‘quattro fromaggi’, ox cheeks with white-onion mash and baby leeks or sea bream ceviche with steamed coconut bread. There are also cheese and charcuterie platters to share, plus desserts such as marzipan semifreddo with black tea and balsamic reduction. Lubrication comes from a regulation line-up of bottled beers and international wines, but don’t miss the cool seasonal cocktails (especially the signature pumpkin martini). If the weather isn’t playing ball, bag one of the couches in the funky warehouse space and mingle with the luvvies, thespians and culture vultures. Note: also open for weekday matinees.

National shame
Having visited Terrace on a number of occasions since my initial review a year ago, it is with a huge degree of disappointment that I now find myself having to write a less than glowing update. Yes, the staff are still enthusiastic and engaging, yes the menu is still varied with dishes to suit all tastes and yes, the small plates approach works really well for pre-theatre. What lets it down somewhat now is that the dishes are noticeably smaller than previous but of course, prices have not followed the same trajectory. Whilst the quality of dishes is in the main, pretty good (the tipsy octopus and venison meatballs our particular standouts), our sharing platter of meat and cheese was an absolute disgrace. £15 for two small triangles of a non-descript hard cheese (possibly Manchengo), 2 small cubes of an ok-ish blue (think Roquefort), four tiny discs of some sort of salami and a slice of parma ham. Topped off by two small pieces of bread, a wedge of lettuce and a few sun dried tomatoes, we were somewhat underwhelmed to say the very least. For once, the bloke decided to voice his opinion, only for the server to say she had to agree with him and that a few customers had made the same observation! D’oh, doesn’t that tell you that you need to adjust either the price or the content Terrace?? A small adjustment to our bill (£93 for 5 dishes, bread, one dessert, bottle of wine and service) may have eased the disappointment but was neither asked for nor offered. A shame as for convenience alone when visiting the National, this really was my “go to” restaurant, but will be looking for alternative eateries when we go to see Twelfth Night next year.

National treasure?
Given that I don't get across to the National Theatre as often as I would like, the Terrace is a great find as otherwise my pre-theatre dining options in this area would be limited to the usual High Street suspects. Terrace offers a good variety of sharing plates served with one eye on the time in order that customers do make curtain up, although unfortunately we had to cancel our cheese plate order as that did not arrive in time. Amends were made with the server's abject apology and to be honest, we had probably eaten sufficient in any case. Can't say it would be a place to linger, but for a quick bite pre-show, it absolutely hits the spot - will definitely return.

Located on a terrace of the National Theatre, with the enchanting view over the river, Terrace Bar is not only a good place for theatre goers. If you happen to be on the South Bank, pop in for some great food and drinks in a nicely laid back yet vibrant atmosphere. The bar offers a wide selection of cocktails and their variety of wines will ensure you'll find something to complement your meal. Service is fast and staff very friendly and helpful. The menu offers range of tapas dishes that are not only delicious but also great value for money. And they cater for everyone, meat eaters, seafood lovers and vegetarians. Whether you fancy a piece of chicken or a healthy salad, you won't be left disappointed. The dishes are simple but with a creative twist like zuchini frite. I especially recommend rabbit served with sweet potatoes that just melt in your mouth. For dessert try marzipan tart. Not being a marzipan enthusiast, this dish blew my mind. It's light in texture and gorgeous in taste. Pair it up with a glass of Prosecco for a nice finish.
