A Covent Garden favourite for years, the old Canela Café has recently been extended and has re-launched as a two-pronged venue incorporating a bustling daytime deli and more intimate wine bar/eatery for the evening crowd. Inside, retro quirks such as old radios blend with delicate chandeliers, marble-topped tables and well-stocked wine shelves, while the kitchen makes the most of top-notch Portuguese imports for a menu of tapas-style ‘petiscos’ and larger plates. Offerings range from Alheira mini burgers with quails’ eggs or squid ‘boats’ with chorizo, peppers and spiced tomatoes to creamy black rice with prawns or bacalau à bras (salt cod with potatoes and eggs), while desserts feature Romeo & Juliet – goiabada (guava paste) with mascarpone. Canela is also proud of its exclusive range of boutique Portuguese wines sourced from small, independent vineyards.
