Chef-proprietor Jason Gallagher’s cosy restaurant in Stockbridge’s historic heart provides an accomplished seasonal menu served in relaxed, unpretentious surroundings. From the succinct, tempting à la carte we enjoyed a starter of rabbit loin wrapped in serrano ham with an earthy cep mousse, wild mushrooms and rich Madeira sauce; and fresh seared scallops teamed with sweet butternut squash purée, apple salsa, ham and caramelised walnuts. To follow, perfectly cooked Gressingham duck breast came with an inspired duck sausage roll alongside dauphinois potatoes, Savoy cabbage, bacon and jus; and a lamb dish encompassed tender rump and belly, lamb confit, potato gateau, wild garlic, and rosemary sauce. Desserts are relatively simple, but well-executed – a tangy baked lemon and vanilla cheesecake, for instance. For best value, order the Sunday evening set menu, which includes a BYOB option. Beautifully decorated with flowers and fairy lights, this intimate, charming dining spot is perfect for romantic dinners.
