About

Set in the basement under Off Broadway bar – but independently run – Kansas Smitty’s is a 1950s-style beatnik bunker where there’s barely room to swing a cat. It’s an intimate space: dark, steamy, raw, and hitting all the right notes, especially on Wednesdays when the eponymous owners showcase their musical talents. For jazz aficionados (who may know the eight-piece swing combo from Ronnie Scott’s and similarly exalted stages), a soirée chez Smitty’s is akin to having the boys jam in your own front room… juiced by Juleps in recycled tins, prepped at the cellar’s microscopic bar. The house signature is one of various bourbon spins on this traditional Kentucky cooler. Another Julep variant – made with Scotch, camomile, and pink peppercorn – calls itself Sleepytime: fat chance! In full swing, Kansas Smitty’s could raise the dead.
