SquareMeal Review of The Yellow House Bar & Kitchen

A welcome sight for returning commuters, this modern European bar-restaurant, opposite Surrey Quays station, attracts multifarious locals with its friendly service & crowd-pleasing menu. The airy, laid-back dining area contains an open kitchen complete with wood-burning oven where perfectly charred, thin-crust pizzas emerge (praised even by visiting Italians). The menu also runs to char-grills of juicy burgers & steaks, along with fish from nearby Billingsgate. A weekly changing set menu lists more creative dishes such as Indian-spiced potato croquettes with coconut & lentil dhal. Bread, cakes & sauces – even ketchup – are made on-site, & puddings, including exemplary ice creams, are a delight. There are plans for a bigger wine display in the cosy, retro bar, along with wine-friendly nibbles.

Absolutely delicious food and enthusiastic team behind

Absolutely delicious food – from hand-crafted freshly-prepared pizza («Four Seasons» is my favourite) to perfectly cooked lamb. Plus, an excellent selection of wines (I highly recommend «Mâcon-Villages Domaine Chêne»). Not to mention fresh bread and desserts!

My family and friends have been eating out and ordering with The Yellow House for quite a few years now and always happy with the quality of ingredients (great to see chef sourcing fresh local produce from the nearby market) and service (their team is very friendly, enthusiastic and honest).

Thank you Jaime, Robert and the team! ????

Yellow House is the (now not so) hidden gem of SE16 and is insanely good in every way yet the team appear to just work tirelessly and I doubt even have opportunity to read such reviews. So this is for you and well overdue Robert Jamie Samuel James Mashoud and co.

Yellow House is the (not so) hidden gem of Surrey Quays Canada Water and Bermondsey.

It is uniquely stylish welcoming classy yet relaxed bar and restaurant with a passionately committed team, whose only goal is for the food to be exquisite and for you to have enjoyed every element.

Yellow House are the consummate hosts; whom each work tirelessly and it says something about a restaurant that has kept the same chefs and hospitality team Robert Jamie James and Young effervescent and spritely Mashoud; all professional, relaxed, and sole purpose to ensure you are comfortable well fed and watered and everything about your experience is enjoyable and of highest standard. I would like to say it is a credit to both Robert and Jamie that this restaurant stands the test of time; to sustain and keep going throughout the turbulence of this pandemic and an already crippled industry says something about how special this restaurant is. The Yellow House cook with love; they serve with love; they do not stop, providing a service and tbh it is a fiver star experience for a fraction of price.

Be patient if you have to wait whilst they constantly adjust to changing guidelines and keep feeding us safely and with due care and diligence.

You eat at Yellow House pizza; pasta; steak and chips; desserts made by Jamie’s and the wonderful chefs fair hands - always indulgent yet clean?! You can eat a meal at a restaurant leaving full, bloated and sick. This is never the case at The Yellow House. The high quality of produce, the attention cooked and prepared by the team, including Samuel and French chef all provide an atmosphere at the pass that makes you feel so comfortable alongside their smiles, careful plating of mouth watering meals, the constant ringing of ‘service’ bells and all; the smoky aroma of the open fires and differing plates wandering past your nose is enough to leave you salivating and feel like your stomach pangs are fighting Anthing Joshua.  Jamie will wander to tables away from Stone Oven and personally provide fresh bread; check how your meals are whilst wiping his brow and often not even having stopped for a break during service always a friendly smile and just kind words.  Robert is divine he is gently and he cannot be anymore attentive imho.  He epitomises good old fashioned service with humility and grace.  I cannot recommend and endorse this award winning restaurant enough. The Yellow House will stand the test of time for simply being a ‘finery of food’ and I cannot recommend enough. Move over Gaucho just kidding sort of ha! They have nothing on this establishment yet I wish everyone in restaurant and hospitality business nothing but support. Tbf I toiled over this review as do I let one of Southwarks best kept secrets out of the bag?

My bad I know lol. In this current climate support local; support your community; support the PEOPLE WHO HAVE SERVED YOU FOR OVER 13 YEARS!

Book a Table - you will not be disappointed in fact I imagine you will end up writing a review.  The array of steaks they have currently is stupid and alway sourced ethically locally and of supreme quality.  I kid you not if you haven’t, do yourself a favour and especially after Covid-19 be nice to you! Eat at The Yellow House. Thank you for all you do to maintain the quality the loss of sleep blood wear and tears we appreciate and here’s to many more meals and moments of gratitude where we can say we salute YOU YELLOW HOUSE for keeping us well in every way; nourishing us physically; mentally and socially.

And they are on the government discount scheme so take advantage of it whilst you can and experience a simply well prepared quality menu. ??

The kind of restaurant where you are always greeted like you are an old friend. It has attractive decor, a casual bistro feel, and a menu that changes regularly enough that you can go weekly and always eat something different. Their wine list really sets them apart. So much thought goes into it. In addition they seem to really hold on to staff so that standards never slip.

I live around the corner from the old Yellow House mentioned here, and the restaurant has now relaunched itself a few hundred yards away. There were a few major teething problems when first launched however it now seems to have settled in quite nicely. The new decor is a little bland yet manages to maintain a warm and pleasant atmosphere. The restaurant is a little schizophrenic and unsure of what it offers with an A La carte, Bistro and Pizza menu in combination with an odd sectioning within the restaurant however the food usually delivers. The menu has a heavy French influence and the Pizzas are probably the restaurants most reliable and redeming feature with a traditional log fired Pizza Oven. The A La Carte and bistro menu offer an interesting variety and regularly changing list of modern and unique interpretations of old classics. Sometimes the dishes sound strange and unfortunately a few times they completely miss the mark however one occasionally encounters a truely magnificent plate of food. It is a shame there is not much consistency, the formula is there but it is almost as though they are trying too hard. One feature where the Yellow House truely excels is its desserts. The co-owner and Pastrie Chef Jamie creates some of the most fabulous home-cooked baking I have tasted anywhere in the world. The meringue, the chocolate brownies, the chocolate cakes, the home-made icecream – its is all to die for and a reason alone to visit. Sadly the service can fall flat at times. If quiet the staff are charming and attentive however when busy the restaurant continues to suffer as it did in its old location with very slow service. It is not uncommon to wait over half an hour from ordering and betwen courses when the restaurant is full and this is a real shame because it can really spoil what would be a lovely experience. At the end of the day this is a young restaurant still in its early years and its popularity is growing fast. Certainly for Surrey Quays it is s breath of fresh air and there is nothing else in the post-code that comes close. 10/10 for effort, but perhaps it should be aiming for an 8/10 and getting smaller things correct. Still, if looking for somwhere nice to eat in Surrey Quays it should be top of the list.
