Surrounded by 1,000 acres of Northumbrian countryside and 25 miles from Newcastle city centre, De Vere’s Slaley Hall is one of the region’s top hotels. Space is one of its foremost assets. The grounds take in PGA championship golf courses and a wide range of on-site activities, including clay pigeon shooting, archery, 4x4 off-roading, laser battlefield, Segways and paintballing. Inside, there are seven flexible conference rooms accommodating up to 300 delegates, or a clutch of lodges for more get-togethers that require more privacy. Facilities are supported by an imaginative team, who might suggest rounding a day of conferencing off with a candlelit barbecue in the woods or a spot of zorbing (rolling down a hill in a gigantic ball). The hotel was refurbished in 2009, using dark-wood panelling, velvet curtains and couches to give interiors a moody, modern look. There’s a spa and health club too.
