The second modern-day coaching inn designed by interiors queen Ilse Crawford is situated in the handsome village of Old Amersham. The Crown’s ancient timbered building is as traditional as they come, giving no hint of the stylish interiors within. Much of the decor is made up of rural materials, with decent mattresses, pure cotton sheets and stacks of wool blankets to keep overnighters comfortable. For entertaining, the Back Room, with its inglenook fireplace and view of the cobbled courtyard, seats up to 40 guests for an intimate dinner or meeting. It is reached through the cosy main bar and restaurant, where a seasonally inspired, locally sourced menu is complemented by the wine list and selection of good ale. In the summer, the outdoor kitchen can be hired for up to 60. Amersham sits at the end of the Metropolitan Line, which is only 40 minutes from central London.
